Self-Assessment
I think that everyone who takes this class would learn something, whether it is something like what a fallacy is or some news about a current event. In my perspective, this class was an experience. I define an experience is an overall package where I learn lessons that I will keep for the rest of my life. I know it make seem like this class doesn’t help with getting a person their first job or getting a person into graduate school but in my opinion, it actually does. It helps with understanding the basic things in life, things that if you do come to understand, success will come easily.
One of the biggest things that I learned was how to analyze people’s mistakes. I already knew that people make certain mistakes for certain reasons, but this class helped me understand what was going on in their head. This lesson was learned from examining the fallacies. When looking at the fallacies, I realized that there is a specific thought process that a person goes through to commit a fallacy. There is obviously some variation because not everyone thinks in the same way, but there are general transition steps through each fallacy.
Moreover, from watching the 12 Angry Men, I learned how to explain these mistakes to the people who were making them. In the movie, one of the juror tried to use logic and examples to show the other juror that what they was solid evidence might have been a misconception. From this I took away that you must think like the other person and understand why they might be thinking what he or she is thinking, then try to explain why he or she might be wrong using examples and counter-evidence in a logical manner.
Another thing that I learned from this class was that legal does not always mean ethical. There have been many examples that we went through in class that showed that just because it was legal, it doesn’t mean that it was for the good. For example, the case in Michael Sandel’s book, where Wal-Mart took out a life insurance policy on an employee and took all the money when the employee died. I think this is unethical because it was without the employees consent, but it was using the employees name and life to get an advantage.
Furthermore, I also learned that this unethicalness, most of the time, has to do with money. There are many greedy people out there that will do anything for money, even put another’s life on the hand. I learned to always be cautious when dealing with others, especially with big corporations, because they might have an ulterior motive. When something is always too good to be true, you should be cautious.
But I also learned that there are some good people out there. When researching about United States’ drinking water, I came across the “green movement”. In this movement, there are people that are truly trying to save our environment and make sure that the resources that we have on this planet don’t run out in the near future. This shows that there are people out there that want to actually help the world.
So what does this all mean? How will this help ME in life? Well human interaction is something that no one can avoid. I will always have to interact will people I like and people that I don’t like. The things that I learned in this class will help me deal with all the situations that I come across. They will help me understand people that I have conflicts with. They will help me understand if I am making a mistake. They will tell me whom I should be cautious with. These lessons will help me through the simple, most basic, things in life; one day at a time.
